Youth Governance

Governance, in a Community Youth Development context, means to engage with authority in the conduct of policy and affairs of the organization or community of which you are part. A fully developed CYD organization should manifest a horizontal, participatory leadership and organizational style that attempts to engage all participants as resourcesóincluding youth.

This issue our online focus is youth governance. Before browsing the articles that are linked below, we offer a brief recapitulation regarding why CYD emphasizes youth participation.

Youth contribute by providing:

  • Remarkable resources and skills, often overlooked and underestimated.
  • A unique perspective that helps us see the whole picture.
  • An earnest desire and developmental need to actively participate in the community.

Youth gain by:

  • Learning important civic and social skills that will make them more effective citizens.
  • Having important developmental needs met through positive participation in the community.

The community, be it school, neighborhood, or organization, gains by:

  • The enriched participation of youth.
  • Adding to the roles of active citizenship a creative energetic component of the community that is too often marginalized.

The articles below offer some powerful examples of youth governance in action.
