Born out of the transition period,
the youth development sector is at it's infancy, and the need for a vibrant, civil
society-based youth sector has never been more important. Youth-serving NGOs must
continue to articulate a compelling and practical mandate. As they seek to become
more durable and effective, NGOs face a number challenges, some of which are listed
below.
- Developing a strong relationship
with communities and with young people.
- Drawing their strength and mandate
from the ground and reducing their dependence on foreign funding.
- Developing concrete ways of involving
young people as key decision-makers in their own governance structures.
- Building a framework for conceptualization
of youth development outcomes and strategies.
- Influencing other systems that
touch young people such as education, juvenile justice, and more.
- Developing a cadre of well trained,
committed youth workers.
