As Educators and practitioners lament the lack of informed involvement of young people
in their civic communities, EPIIC (Education for Public Inquiry and Internaional
Citizenship) is working to promote the active engagement and leadership of young
people in global and national issues. With overviews from the program directors and
through the words of its students, this article describes the EPIIC program at Tufts
University, its high school counterpart, INQUIRY, and how their innovative curricula
promote meaningful dialogue and inspire learning. |

On the basketball court and off, the author's "Responsibility-in-the Gym"
model has helped inner-city students to learn self-control, teamwork, and leadership
skills. This success of this model, known as the Urban Youth Leader Project, has
led to the formation of a national partnership between universities and communities,
which is dedicated to teaching these skills to underserved youth throughout the country.
