Guidelines for Manuscript Preparation
The editors at New Designs for Youth Development welcome manuscripts that
contribute to the understanding of theory, research, and practical program applications
pertaining to youth and community development. We encourage contributions from concerned
young people as well as from adult practitioners, policy makers, educators, researchers,
and volunteers.
It is New Designís mission to serve as an intentional voice to promote a holistic
view of youth and community development; provide knowledge, impetus, and confidence
to growing youth development learning communities; and advocate and promote youth
participation in all areas of community life. We welcome multidimensional articles
that include sidebars, photos, art work, poetry, tables, graphs, and/or illustrations.
Editorial content will promote the core CYD values of youth/adult partnerships, participation,
diversity, democracy, and social action. We are also interested in publishing opposing
viewpoints.
Types of Articles
- Promoting and modeling CYD values
- Applying research to practice,
and vice-versa
- Promoting dialogue
These topics can be addressed in a variety of formats, including feature articles,
columns (see below), and interviews. We are particularly interested in program profiles
that help readers answer the following important questions:
- What did the profiled program
staff do that led to their success? What were the challenges?
- What are the implications of
their findings to other programs?
- How can I apply the described
practices to my work?
- How can research be applied to
practice, and vice versa?
- How can we promote dialogue to
build bridges between divergent viewpoints?
- What can youth tell us about
programs that work, their hopes, and their dreams?
- In addition, can you provide
some evidence of program authenticity; i.e., recent evaluation reports, awards, or
formal recognition of excellence?
Feature articles should be 2500 - 3500 words; columns should be 750 - 1500 words.
Columns
At least four columns from the list below are published in each issue. With the
exception of ìInternational Insightsî and ìChildrenís Expressî anyone may submit
articles for consideration. A description of the columns follows.
- Spotlight on Youth. A
regular column on and by youth who are making a difference in their communities.
- Research and Practice: Completing
the Circle. What does the latest community youth development research tell us?
What are its implications for practice? Authors are asked to include a ìtake home
lessonî or suggestions to readers that can be immediately applied to their programs.
Examples include curricula, activities, evaluation tools, etc.
- View from the Hill. A
summary of action at the federal level that impacts community youth development,
or other news and/or political items of note.
- Green Action. Written
by youth or adults, this column profiles environmental initiatives with a community
youth development focus.
- Opinion. A place to showcase
your views of CYD-related news, initiatives, programs, and policies. We welcome controversial
viewpoints.
- International Insights.
A regular contribution from members of the International Youth Foundation (IYF) with
updates on international CYD news, events, and programs from IYF partner countries.
- Childrenís Express. Interviews,
roundtables, and commentary edited by teens and adults from Childrenís Express: an
independent, non-profit news service.
- CYD Exchange. A collection
of CYD strategies, advice, challenges, and aspirations. What innovative programs
have worked for you? What have you learned working with youth that might benefit
others? Entries are limited to 300 words or less.
